A Dedication
September 27, 2005
On September 21, 2005, the Cortlandville Town Board adopted a 3-part resolution in memorial of former Town Supervisor Raymond G. Thorpe. The resolution, created to convey to the community the sense of loss that came with Ray’s death, also contains a dedication.
Firstly, the Town Board extended its “regret and condolences” to Mr. Thorpe’s family.
Secondly, the Town Hall, located at 3577 Terrace Road, in Cortland, New York “shall be renamed the Raymond G. Thorpe Municipal Building.” New signage will be placed to “prominently indicate this change.”
And finally, certified copies of the resolution were to be provided to Mark Thorpe and Kimberly Thorpe Knight, children to our deceased colleague, as well as his companion, Valerie Gilbert.

Remembering Raymond G. Thorpe
September 21, 2005
The Town Board requested, that on September 19, 2005, all town buildings were to close at 11:30 a.m. in order for employees to attend services for Raymond G. Thorpe, Town Supervisor.
Ray died on the night of September 6th, after a brief struggle with cancer. He provided a lifetime of service, not only to his community, but to his country as well. He served in WWII as a Naval officer, after which he joined the faculty at Cornell University as a professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, teaching for nearly 40 years. After the death of his wife, he rejoined the faculty at Cornell to assist undergraduates in the Advising Services office of the College of Engineering, where he worked until the end of the last academic year.
Raymond G. Thorpe is survived by his son, Mark, and daughter, Kim, his companion, Babe, and endless friends, colleagues and former students. This admirable man will be greatly missed.
Memorial services were held at Sage Chapel on the Cornell University campus on Monday, September 19th at 1:00 p.m., and were open to the public.
